Commercial HVAC Jobs in Austin, TX

We are building a commercial mechanical crew in Central Texas — technicians who want real equipment, straight pay and a company that answers the phone when they call it too.

Why Here

What is actually different about working here

Every HVAC company says they are a family and they value their people. Here is what we will say instead, because it is checkable.

Commercial only. You will not spend your summer in attics. Our work is rooftop units, chillers, cooling towers, boilers and central plants. That is more interesting work, it pays better, and the skills compound — a technician who can troubleshoot a chilled water loop is worth considerably more five years from now than one who has changed a thousand residential condensers.

We do our own heavy mechanical. Most shops our size sub out chiller and central plant work. We do not. If you want to learn that side of the trade instead of watching a specialist do it, there is room here that larger companies cannot offer and smaller ones do not have the work for.

We are part of an established group. 512 Mechanical is the mechanical arm of the same family as 512 Refrigeration, which has been keeping Austin kitchens running for years. New company, experienced people, existing customers — not a startup hoping to find its first job.

You get the tools and the truck. Stocked van, the instruments to diagnose properly rather than guess, and manufacturer training. Sending a technician to a call without what they need wastes their day and the customer’s money.

Roles

What we hire for

We are always interested in hearing from good people, whether or not a specific role is posted. If you are strong and the timing is not right, we will tell you straight and keep your details.

Commercial HVAC Service Technician

Diagnostics and repair on rooftop units, split systems, air handlers and VAV. EPA certification required; commercial experience preferred but we will talk to a strong residential tech who wants to move over.

Chiller / Central Plant Technician

Air-cooled and water-cooled machines, towers, pumps and hydronic loops. The most specialised work we do and the hardest to hire for — if this is you, call.

Installation Technician

Equipment set, change-outs, rigging support, piping and startup on new construction and retrofit projects.

Sheet Metal Installer

Fabrication and install for new construction and tenant finish-out work. Layout skills valued.

Apprentice / Helper

No experience needed. If you show up on time, keep your hands busy and want to learn a trade that pays, we will teach you. This is how most good commercial techs started.

Service Coordinator / Dispatcher

The person who answers the phone at 2 a.m. and gets the right tech to the right building. Harder than it sounds and central to how we operate.

What We Look For

Honestly, it is mostly this

Technical skill can be taught. These are harder to install in someone.

  • You show up when you said you would
  • You tell the customer the truth, including when it is bad news
  • You write down what you found instead of keeping it in your head
  • You would rather diagnose it properly than swap parts until it works
  • You clean up the mechanical room before you leave
  • You call for help before a small problem becomes an expensive one
  • You can be trusted alone on a customer’s roof
  • You want to know how the whole system works, not just your piece of it
The Honest Part

What this job actually involves

Commercial mechanical is good work, and it is still work. You will be on roofs in a Texas August. There is an on-call rotation, because we genuinely do answer the phone 24/7 and that has to be somebody. Some weeks run long when a building is down and the customer cannot wait.

What we will not do is pretend otherwise in a job ad and let you find out in month two. If any of that is a dealbreaker, better for both of us to know now.

In exchange: competitive pay for this market, the equipment to do the job right, work that makes you more valuable every year, and a shop small enough that the owner knows your name and what you are good at.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need commercial experience to apply?

Not for every role. For service technician positions commercial experience helps a great deal, but we will absolutely talk to a strong residential technician who wants to move into commercial work — the fundamentals transfer and the rest is learnable. For apprentice and helper roles no experience is required at all.

Do I need to be EPA certified?

For any role handling refrigerant, yes, and that is a legal requirement rather than a company preference. If you are in progress or willing to get certified, say so on the application — for the right person we will work with you on it.

What area would I be working in?

The Austin metro and Central Texas. Our shop is in northwest Austin near the Cedar Park line, and most work sits inside roughly an 80-mile radius — Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Leander, Kyle, Buda and San Marcos. See our full service area. You would not be travelling out of region or staying overnight.

Is there an on-call rotation?

Yes. We advertise 24/7 emergency response to our customers and we mean it, which means somebody carries the phone. It rotates rather than falling on one person, and it is compensated. We would rather tell you that up front than surprise you with it.

How do I send a résumé?

Fill in the application form on this page, then email your résumé to service@512mechanical.com and we will match the two up. Every application gets read by a person and we reply either way — including when the answer is no.

Equipment down right now?

Emergency commercial HVAC and chiller response across Austin and Central Texas — nights, weekends and holidays.
